Extract of a speech made at the IAM Annual Lunch, London, Wednesday December 7, 2005 by Dr Stephen Ladyman, Minister of State for Transport:

And I hope you will have success with Drive & Survive, acquired earlier this year.  Indeed back when I was a company car driver I did a Drive & Survive course!

“The company I worked for realised that it was important to have their employees trained in defensive driving, which is why they chose Drive & Survive, and fleet driver training generally is an increasingly important part of the market.  Most employers recognise they have a legal responsibility for the health and safety of their staff at work - but too many are failing to look after employees who drive as part of their job.  That has to change.  The duty of care applies as much to high-mileage company reps as office-based clerical staff and to every company that employs commercial and passenger vehicle drivers.

Extremely good course and the instructor was really good.  He showed me many new techniques, which have improved my standard of driving.  I unknowingly apply these now so it must have been good!  My average fuel consumption has decreased dramatically and I feel I am aware of situations more.  Before [the course] I was averaging around 25 MPG and this has now gone up to 33 MPG so a big increase.  Recommend it to anyone...Thanks for the experience and opportunity to do this course.”

It was a rewarding time.  I've picked up more elements to improve my driving.  [The trainer] presented his material well, made constructive comments while I drove.  He made me feel comfortable while driving and did not put me under pressure in anyway or make me feel like I was sitting a driving test.  Well worth me my time and invaluable to my family ensuring that I try to get to and from customer sites safely while on business.  Thanks.
